Private renting more popular than ever

With renting fast becoming the social norm for many, the number of private tenants has exceeded the number of social tenants for the first time since the 1960s.

The English Housing Survey for 2011-12 shows that the rising number of private tenants, 3.84 million, outnumbered the 3.8 million in social housing.

This increase reflects growing demand for rental homes from a rising population and those unable to buy a property for themselves. However, it also reflects the growing trend for flexible living. Renting allows people to relocate and up-size or down-size easily. This combined with the fact that the quality of the rental homes on offer has improved dramatically over recent years makes becoming a tenant a very attractive option and is often preferred to home ownership.

For tenants looking for a new rental property, the choice is vast. No longer just the remit of students and single person households, there are a vast variety of rental property types on offer. We present a small selection below:

Looks like we going the German route, the majority rent over there. There are benefits to renting its not all dead money!!

    • Gary, private tenants in places like Hamburg or Munich might, like their counterparts in London, pay up to half of their take-home pay on rent – so ‘es ist nicht alles rosen’!

Nor does the AST afford UK tenants the security that those elsewhere in Europe enjoy. Whilst this is advantageous to UK landlords, we do encourage rental property investors not to take advantage – we are, after all, providing somebody with a home.
